Introduction to Recycled Polyester

What is Recycled Polyester Fabric?

Recycled polyester fabric, also known as RPET fabric, is made from the repeated recycling of waste plastic products. This process reduces dependence on petroleum resources and decreases carbon dioxide emissions. Recycling a single plastic bottle can reduce carbon emissions by 25.2 grams, which is equivalent to saving 0.52 cc of oil and 88.6 cc of water. Currently, recycled polyester fibers made from recycled plastic bottles are widely used in textiles. Compared to traditional production methods, recycled polyester fabrics can save nearly 80% of energy, significantly reducing fuel consumption. Data shows that producing one ton of recycled polyester yarn can save one ton of oil and six tons of water. Therefore, using recycled polyester fabric is positively aligned with China’s sustainable development goals of low carbon emissions and reduction.

Features of Recycled Polyester Fabric:

Soft Texture
Recycled polyester exhibits excellent physical properties, with a soft texture, good flexibility, and high tensile strength. It also effectively resists wear and tear, making it significantly different from regular polyester.

Easy to Wash
Recycled polyester has excellent laundering properties; it does not degrade from washing and effectively resists fading, making it very convenient to use. It also has good wrinkle resistance, preventing garments from stretching or deforming, thus maintaining their shape.

Eco-Friendly
Recycled polyester is not made from newly produced raw materials, but rather repurposes waste polyester materials. Through refining, new recycled polyester is created, which effectively utilizes waste resources, reduces the raw material consumption of polyester products, and lessens the pollution from the manufacturing process, thereby protecting the environment and reducing carbon emissions.

Antimicrobial and Mildew Resistant
Recycled polyester fibers have a certain degree of elasticity and a smooth surface, granting them good antimicrobial properties that help prevent bacterial growth. Additionally, they possess excellent mildew resistance, which prevents garments from deteriorating and developing unpleasant odors.

How to Apply for GRS Certification for Recycled Polyester and What Requirements Must Be Met?

Recycled polyester yarns have been certified under the internationally recognized GRS (Global Recycled Standard) and by the reputable SCS Environmental Protection Agency in the USA, making them highly recognized internationally. The GRS system is based on integrity and requires compliance with five main aspects: Traceability, Environmental protection, Social responsibility, Recycled label, and General principles.

Applying for GRS certification involves the following five steps:

Application
Companies can apply for certification online or through manual application. Upon receiving and verifying the electronic application form, the organization will assess the feasibility of the certification and related costs.

Contract
After evaluating the application form, the organization will quote based on the application situation. The contract will detail the estimated costs, and companies should confirm the contract as soon as they receive it.

Payment
Once the organization issues a quoted contract, companies should promptly arrange for payment. Before formal review, the company must pay the certification fee outlined in the contract and inform the organization via email to confirm the funds are received.

Registration
Companies must prepare and send the relevant system documents to the certification organization.

Review
Prepare the necessary documents related to social responsibility, environmental considerations, chemical control, and recycled management for GRS certification.

Issuance of Certificate
After the review, companies meeting the criteria will receive the GRS certification.

In conclusion, the advantages of recycled polyester are significant and will have a positive impact on environmental protection and the development of the apparel industry. From both economic and environmental perspectives, it is a good choice.
